Early work is accelerating on Eyre Peninsula’s new desalination plant, with the announcement that global construction company ACCIONA has been signed on as the project’s major construction partner.
The reverse osmosis plant at Billy Lights Point will provide a climate-independent source of sustainable drinking water for SA Water’s 35,000 customers in the surrounding region.
SA Water and ACCIONA have been working to refine the project’s design to determine the final cost of delivering the plant as quickly as possible, while taking into account stakeholder feedback to minimise environmental impacts.
This has meant the total cost of the project has been revised to approximately $470 million, with first water expected to be delivered by the end of next year.
ACCIONA will lead construction of the 5.3 gigalitre-per-year capacity plant, while marine construction specialist McConnell Dowell will work with SA Water to deliver the associated marine infrastructure.
The two companies were part of the consortium that delivered the 100 gigalitre-capacity Adelaide Desalination Plant in 2011.
In addition, South Australian-based construction firm Leed will design and build the pipeline that will transfer the drinking water from the new plant to the existing water distribution network.
More details of current and future construction activities can be found in the latest project update.
