Qld boosts social housing stock

Queensland is adding almost 5,000 social and affordable homes to its housing stock.

Sam O’Connor (qld.gov.au)

“From November to the end of February, the Crisafulli Government has accelerated the delivery of 5,000 social and affordable homes either in contract or under construction across Queensland,” Minister for Housing Sam O’Connor said.

Once all are constructed, the additional homes will boost Queensland’s social and affordable housing stock by 6 per cent.

One of the projects in Brisbane’s Woolloongabba has secured a contract for 81 new homes – 41 social and 40 affordable.

Delivered in partnership with Brisbane Housing Company and Queensland Investment Corporation, the development is intended for essential workers and vulnerable Queenslanders. “Projects like this one in Woolloongabba show how we’re unlocking new supply in high-demand areas to meet the urgent housing needs of Queenslanders,” O’Connor said.

Rebecca Oelkers (BHC)

BHC CEO Rebecca Oelkers said the not-for-profit organisation was proud to deliver vital housing to Woolloongabba. “The community is calling for tangible solutions to the housing crisis, and this site will provide much-needed homes for essential workers in the PA Hospital and nearby retail precincts, as well as those on the state’s social housing register.”

BHC’s collaboration with the state government demonstrates a shared commitment to providing affordable housing solutions, added Oelkers. “We are ready to build and eagerly anticipate the commencement of many more developments together.”

Adam Allan (qld.gov.au)

Brisbane City Council’s chair of planning and suburban renewal Adam Allan said local government was also committed to helping boost housing affordability. “While there are limited levers available to local governments, we continue to work closely with the state government and organisations like Brisbane Housing Company to help make housing more affordable.”

Queensland’s construction drive is part of the government’s plan to deliver one million homes by 2044 – including 53,500 new social homes.
