“The new board members will play a vital role in ensuring CleanCo and Stanwell can deliver for Queensland’s ongoing and evolving energy needs,” Minister for Energy David Janetzki said.

While thanking the outgoing board members for their contribution, Janetzki said he looked forward to working with the new appointees, “who bring wide-ranging expertise and experience across government and industry”.

Minister for Finance Ros Bates acknowledged the significant work ahead for the sector as it enters a period of transformation and growth. “It’s critical Queensland’s energy GOCs have strong leadership to secure our energy future and deliver for Queensland,” she said.

The government has committed CleanCo to deliver a $50-million pumped hydro project at Mount Rawdon – the first working gold mine in Australia to be repurposed as a power station and energy storage facility, with the capacity to generate 20,000 megawatt hours of electricity each day. Both CleanCo and Stanwell will also progress two new gas-fired generation projects.

Meanwhile, CleanCo faces allegations of underpaying 150 of its workers and is facing a multimillion-dollar compensation bill. The GOC is currently conducting a review into the matter. “Impacted employees will be remediated at the completion of the review,” reads a CleanCo statement. “The review is ongoing and is expected to be finalised later in 2025.”
