Gov employee charged over alleged taxpayer-funded trips

A government employee has been charged after allegedly spending almost $50,000 in public funds to fund multiple overseas trips.

The Australian Federal Police began investigating the Sydney woman in June 2024 after receiving a tip-off.

It’s alleged the undisclosed woman used $49,000 of public funds to pay for multiple flights and accommodation in connection with four personal trips overseas.

It’s also alleged she used a falsified visa letter to support her claim that she was travelling for work and arranged a false document for a foreign national to obtain a visa for entry into Australia.

AFP officers executed a search warrant at the woman’s home in December.

The government employee appeared before Downing Centre Local Court in Sydney’s CBD on Tuesday and was charged with:

  • dishonestly obtaining a gain from a Commonwealth entity
  • abuse of public office
  • delivering a document that is false or misleading in connexion with the proposed entry of a non-citizen into Australia with an application for a visa.

The woman was granted conditional bail and is due to re-appear before Downing Centre Local Court on 2 July.
