Albania appoints AI-generated minister

The Albanian Government has appointed an AI-generated minister to its procurement portfolio.

In a world-first, an AI bot developed to help Albanians navigate government services online has been promoted to head public procurement, the prime minister has announced.

Edi Rama (Partia Socialiste)

“Diella is the first cabinet minister who isn’t physically present, but is virtually created by AI,” Prime Minister Edi Rama said.

It’s hoped Diella’s appointment will make Albania “a country where public tenders are 100 per cent free of corruption”, said Rama, while announcing the cabinet ministers who will serve in the Socialist Party’s fourth consecutive government.

Diella – which translates to “sun” – will be tasked with objectively examining the merits of private companies bidding for a government contract.

Public tenders have a long history of corruption in the Balkan state, which has extended to the upper echelons of government. As a result, Prime Minister Rama said public tender decisions would be taken “out of the ministries” and placed in the authority of Diella – “the public servant of procurement”.
