New local government department head

The Queensland government has appointed Bronwyn Blagoev as Director General of the Department of Local Government.

Previously Queensland’s Independent Assessor – an independent statutory authority that investigates complaints about councillors –Blagoev has held other senior executive roles in government departments, including Executive Director at the Department of Local Government and Planning.

“Ms Blagoev is an experienced executive leader and is a passionate advocate for reform, she is celebrated for her ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders and her deep commitment to advancing outcomes for rural and regional communities,” says a statement.

Minister for Local Government Ann Leahy said Blagoev brought a wealth of experience to the department – responsible for overseeing and supporting the state’s 77 councils. “With more than 20 years’ experience in supporting Queensland’s local governments, Ms Blagoev is well placed to lead the department.”

Blagoev has a background in delivering strong results in complex environments,” Leahy added.  

Blagoev’s LinkedIn profile says the former lawyer is “driven to deliver and get things done, with a passion for seeing local governments deliver for their communities. Always questioning how we can better support local governments.”

Leahy extended thanks to Acting Director-General Joshua Hannan for his leadership in the role for the past six months. Mr Hannan returns to his position as Deputy Director-General Local Government Division.
