Hunt on for two new Anti-Corruption watchdogs

Two of Australia’s leading anti-corruption jobs are up for grabs – one in Canberra and the other in Perth.

The Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity (ACLEI) is in the market for an Integrity Commissioner on a five-year contract, whose main job is to detect and prevent corruption in the Australian Federal Police, the Australian Crime Commission, and Customs and Border Protection.

It’s not just the obvious law enforcement agencies the Integrity Commissioner will oversee. Last year the money laundering agency Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC), the criminal records agency CrimTrac and the quarantine section of the Department of Agriculture also came under the commissioner’s jurisdiction, whose powers include being able to hold coercive hearings.

The previous incumbent – the inaugural Integrity Commissioner – was Phillip Moss, whose seven-year tenure included the significant anti-corruption investigation Operation Heritage, which examined corrupt conduct at Sydney International Airport and exposed flaws in airport security.

Robert Cornall AO was appointed Acting Integrity Commissioner and head of the Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity in July this year.

The potential corruption in the federal arena has came into sharp focus this year after former Independent Commissioner Against Corruption in New South Wales, David Ipp AO QC, called for a federal version of the ICAC and urged that in-house corporate lobbyists be registered along with guns for hire.

Meanwhile, the Western Australian Government is seeking a Chief Executive, on a 12 months to five year contract, for its Corruption and Crime Commission to investigate misconduct in the Western Australian public sector and to combat and reduce the incidence of organised crime.

The Chief Executive advises and supports the Corruption and Crime Commissioner (CCC).

Executive Director Mike Silverstone –who outlasted three CCC Commissioners – has been in the job at the powerful corruption watchdog for ten years and plans to retire in October
