‘Digital rockstar’ Dominello awarded honorary fellowship

Former NSW minister Victor Dominello has been awarded an honorary fellowship by the professional association for Australia’s technology sector for modernising the delivery of government services.

During his time as customer service and digital government minister, Mr Dominello led digital transformation in the NSW government, including development of the Service NSW app and the digital drivers licence.

Awarding the Fellowship in Sydney on Wednesday, ACS President Dr Nick Tate said Mr Dominello had shown how the technology sector can deliver benefits to the community by sharing data safely and legitimately.

“The fellowship recognises Mr Dominello’s contribution and his leadership in driving NSW’s achievements, along with his passion for modernising how governments deliver services to their citizens,” Dr Tate said in a statement.

The ACS said Mr Dominello’s data sharing reforms involved massive changes in attitudes and government operations, and helped the government deliver services during the COVID epidemic, including QR Code check-in capability.

In 2015, his actions as NSW Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation also led to the establishment of the NSW Data Analytics Centre to build capabilities in whole-of-government data analytics.

He also oversaw ongoing projects including the digital birth certificate, the education wallet, verifiable credentials and eConveyancing reforms.

ACS NSW Branch Chair, Helen McHugh described Mr Dominello as “a rock star” and a champion of the ICT industry.

“We’re very grateful for the work he did as minister. We’re looking forward to seeing his next steps,” she said.

Mr Dominello announced last August he would end his 14-year parliamentary career at the March state election, citing a deteriorating family health condition.
