Lighting Council hits high beam on new LED standards

Growing market calls for information on lighting has resulted in the release of a practical guide for commercial users of LEDs according to Lighting Council Australia.

The peak group has launched a new resource, ‘A Guide to Choosing LED Products and Suppliers’ which it says gives a comprehensive checklist on safety, electromagnetic compatibility, quality, warranty, component compatibility and installation.

Lighting Council chief executive, Bryan Douglas, said there has been increasing market demand for independent information at a time of profound change in lighting technology and the lighting industry.

He said while the technology has developed rapidly with excellent product available, there are still many sub-standard LEDs being sold in Australia.

“There are sub-standard suppliers peddling LED wares who know little and care less about Australia’s regulatory environment for lighting products,” Mr Douglas said.

He added that there were also a lot of products in the market that failed to meet the performance claims of their suppliers.

A key part of the new guide explains how to check registration of LED products under the new Australian Electrical Equipment Safety Scheme.

There is also advice on how to verify critical parameters such as power consumption, light output and luminous efficiency and component compatibility with dimmers.
