City of Bendigo director takes senior role with Victorian  government

City of Bendigo’s director of strategy and growth is taking up a new role with Victoria’s Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action.

Steve Hamilton

Steve Hamilton will join DEECA as regional director Loddon Mallee next month.

Since joining the City two years ago, Mr Hamilton has overseen the Bendigo Art Gallery, venues and events, tourism, and economic development.

His time with Bendigo also coincided with Covid-19; the hugely successful Elvis exhibition and significant local planning work.

Mr Hamilton said he was proud of what his directorate has achieved for the City and looked forward to working in the Galkangu government hub.

“I am excited by the opportunity to continue to make a contribution to the region at the State level and look forward to continuing to work in Galkangu enjoying the great culture that is developing between organisations in that building,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Acting CEO Andrew Cooney wished Mr Hamilton good luck in his transition to state government.

“He will continue to be a great advocate for the region and an important partner for the City, so we look forward to maintaining a close working relationship and achieving great outcomes for the benefit of central Victoria,” Mr Cooney said.

Mr Hamilton finishes up at the council on August 18.
