In a move to stimulate sales and export of local art, the Tasmanian Government has announced Australia’s first loan scheme for private art collectors.

Arts Minister, Michelle O’Byrne has launched the Collect Art Purchase scheme, which would see 11 commercial galleries across the state offering the 12-month interest-free loans for the local artworks valued between $400 and $10,000.

Ms O’Byrne said the partnership was a means to ensure the quality and standards of the pieces, and all Australian residents would be eligible for the support, starting at $750 with a 25-per cent deposit.  

“I am thrilled that we are leading the country with this opportunity to encourage and enable people to buy Tasmanian artworks,” she said.

“I encourage art lovers to take advantage of the program and purchase a wonderful Tasmanian work of art to treasure.”

Modelled on similar successful programs in the UK, France and the Netherlands, the loan can be applied when purchasing original Tasmanian paintings, photographs, sculptures, furniture, jewellery, drawings, glasswork, textiles, metalwork, ceramics and new media.

However, business entities are not eligible for the scheme.

Ms O’Byrne said the scheme was expected to pave the way for local artists by widening their exposure to the national market.
 
“We have such a wealth of highly creative and successful artists in this state. It is important that their work is seen not just locally, but nationally as well.”

Mark Bishop, director of Stanley Artworks, said the landmark scheme would help to buoy sales in the bleak economic environment.

“There is no more important time in the history of selling art for the introduction of this scheme,’’ Mr Bishop said.
