The City of Adelaide has announced that telecommunications carrier TPG will build and operate a 10 Gbps fibre-to-the premises (FTTP) network across the Adelaide CBD and North Adelaide as part of its ‘Ten Gigabit Adelaide’ strategy.
“It will be a game changer for Adelaide,” said Lord Mayor Martin Haese. ”It will give Adelaide based businesses a distinct competitive advantage. This in turn will help to retain and attract new businesses to the city, create jobs, drive innovation and investment, and generate huge economic, social and financial returns for the city and the local community.
“The transformational network will unleash a wide range of new possibilities for businesses and organisations, without being inhibited by the restrictions and congestion often experienced with traditional internet services.”
TPG will begin implementation in early 2018. Speaking at TPG’s Annual General Meeting in Sydney on 6 December, TPG CFO Stephen Banfield said the network would service over 1000 sites within Adelaide City.
“TPG will own and operate the network. Construction is occurring with financial support from Adelaide City, which will substantially reduce the costs normally be payable by businesses to obtain such remarkable speeds.
“TPG and our wholesale customers will benefit from the build by being able to supply carriage services to users in the CBD and North Adelaide. Businesses there will benefit from high-speed connectivity at very attractive prices.
Ten Gigabit Adelaide was announced in 2016. it is designed to enable businesses to connect to a dedicated fibre-optic network operating at 10 Gbps, around a hundred times higher than the hundred Mbps maximum claimed for the NBN.
Ten Gigabit Adelaide is specifically designed for businesses and organisations located in the City of Adelaide, giving City and North Adelaide based businesses a distinct competitive advantage. This in turn will help to retain and attract new businesses to the City of Adelaide, create jobs, drive innovation and investment, and generate huge economic, social and financial returns for the City and the local community.
The Ten Gigabit Adelaide information pack says that services will allow businesses connected to the network to be able to transmit data at 10Gbps speeds between offices and other businesses with high security, no data transfer limit and at super low latency.
