Sydney joins the great garage sale

The City of Sydney has joined an innovative project to curb waste to landfill.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore announced on Tuesday that the City of Sydney would join the national Garage Sale Trail, hosting two massive garage sales in Glebe and Surry Hills on April 10.

The inaugural Garage Sale Trail was held in Bondi in May 2010. The pilot project featured 126 garage sales and an estimated 15 shipping containers of goods were sold.

Cr Moore said Sydney's involvement in the event would help reduce the amount of reusable goods ending up in landfill sites.

“Sydney’s rubbish tips will reach capacity in five years and our waste will have to be sent 250 kilometres away by train to a new tip, which will cost more and produce more carbon pollution,” Cr Moore said.

“We all need to start seriously thinking of new ways to recycle and reuse goods.”

Cr Moore said the City of Sydney had an aim of re-using, recycling or recovering two thirds of Council and residential waste by 2014.
