Mr Shepherd is the inaugural chairman of agency, which has responsibility for a large portfolio of stadiums and indoor venues across the state.

Mr Shepherd served as a board member, chairman and trustee of the Sydney Cricket Ground, and played a key role in planning and delivery of the Allianz Stadium.

Trade and investment minister Alister Henskens confirmed Mr Shepherd’s departure on Monday.

“On behalf of the NSW Government I wish to thank Tony for his outstanding leadership, expertise and contribution to the development and operation of our state’s cherished sporting facilities, and the many hours he has dedicated to this role,” the minister said in a statement.

Mr Shepherd began his career with the Australian Public Service before joining Transfield Services, becoming chairman in 2005 and retiring in 2013. He is currently Chairman of the GWS Giants AFL Club.

Recent reports have suggested that both Labor and the Coalition had been preparing to remove Mr Shepherd from the role with Venues NSW after the state election.

Deputy Chairman, Rod McGeoch will serve as interim Chair.
