In a remarkable infrastructure feat, Brisbane, one of Australia’s fastest growing cities is set to benefit from an extension to the Gateway Bridge crossing the Brisbane River, two years ahead of schedule.

A new bridge forms part of the $1.88 billion Gateway Upgrade Project, the largest road and bridge project in Queensland’s history, and will be open for a community day on May 16.

It is a duplicate bridge to the Gateway, and Queensland Government has announced the pair are to be named after long-serving Queensland public servant, Sir Leo Hielscher.

Although the name choice has met with some community opposition, the new bridge project itself will cut 15 minutes from traveling times once fully completed and is being welcomed by a wide range of community groups.
