Former Victorian Premier Dennis Napthine has been appointed chair of the government agency charged with implementing the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Making the announcement on Monday, NDIS minister Linda Reynolds said Dr Napthine was eminently qualified to ensure the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) continued to deliver on its promise to people with disability, their families and carers.

As Premier in 2013, Dr Napthine reached agreement with the federal government to establish the NDIS in the state.

He is also the father of a son with a disability.

“Through his work with local and regional disability services, which includes hands-on experience as a direct care provider, Dr Napthine has shown his commitment to making tangible improvements to the lives of people with disabilities,” the Minister said in a statement.

Dr Napthine, who was appointed to the NDIA boad last December, was also Victoria’s Minister for Youth and Community Services, which included disability services.

He was nominated by Senator Reynolds to lead the NDIA in February.

Mr Napthine will serve a three year term as chair starting April 1, taking over from acting chair Jim Minto, who remains on the board.
