Ms Crawford, who finished up as a senior advisor to local government and regional development minister Kirsty McBain last week,  starts her new post with ALGA on August 28.

“I have always admired the drive of local governments to deliver for their communities and I look forward to using my knowledge of cross-government programs and negotiations to deliver for members,” Ms Crawford said in statement.

“Helping the community has been a constant in my career and I’m thrilled to join ALGA, where their members put the needs of community front and centre every day,” she added in a social media post.

Prior to her job with Minister McBain, Ms Crawford was Director Regionalisation and Drought with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications, and director of social policy and Indigenous affairs in the Department of PM&C.

ALGA President Linda Scott said Ms Crawford was selected from a strong field of candidates

“I am delighted to welcome Amy Crawford as ALGA’s next CEO. She brings a wealth of experience to the organisation and a clear understanding of ALGA’s role, and the opportunities to work creatively and collaboratively with the Federal Government for the benefit of councils and our communities.”

Ms Crawford takes over from Liz de Chastel, who has been acting in the position since March following the resignation of  Matt Pinnegar.
