City of Perth is set to house the state’s first hydrogen refuelling station in partnership with a company that hopes to become one of the first in Australia to produce commercial green hydrogen.
City of Perth Mayor Basil Zempilas announced the in-principle agreement with clean energy company Frontier Energy during the annual general meeting of the World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP) hosted in Perth last week.
The planned station will be located in West Perth, subject to approvals and a final investment decision.
Cr Zempilas says the station will boost the use of hydrogen fuelled cars by the city’s residents.
“Having a city-based refuelling station forms an important part of our sustainability plan,” he said.
“Frontier Energy will be an important partner for the City as we strive to create a healthy city where environmental, social and economic systems are in balance.”
‘Hydrogen highway’
Frontier Energy managing director Sam Lee Mohan said the company was excited to be working with City of Perth on the station, which will provide hydrogen refuelling for fuel cell electric vehicles.
Frontier, which is developing the Bristol Springs Green Hydrogen Project in WA, planned to supply a “hydrogen highway” with stations throughout the state, he said.
“Subject to a final investment decision, the hydrogen refuelling station will be an important step in the development of hydrogen-fuelled vehicles as a transport alternative in WA,” he said.
“Our long-term vision is to supply a hydrogen highway with multiple green hydrogen refuelling stations throughout WA, that will enable a significant reduction of WA’s carbon emissions from transport and bulk haulage.”
Perth is the only Australian member city of the WECP, which aims to connect global cities on a sustainable energy platform.
The WECP conference ran from November 1-3 and was attended by 40 delegates from ten cities.

I wish to congratulate your pursuit in use of H2 as realistic means of eliminating carbon pollution. My opinion is EV vehicles are a waste of raw materials & energy are excessively heavy rendering them inefficient compared to FCEV.
Wasn’t there hydrogen refuelling station back in 1980s for bus trial? Wasn’t it abandoned, replaced by Ebuses, so much more economic and convenient in every way?
