Australia Post commits to net zero by 2050

Australia Post has become the first Commonwealth Government Business Enterprise to target net zero by 2050.

The commitment is contained in Aus Post’s 2025 Sustainability Roadmap released on last Wednesday.

The document outlines a range of targets around emissions, renewable energy, sustainable packaging, landfill reductions and social procurement.

Australia Post says it will also boost its electric fleet and identify opportunities for investing in sustainable aviation fuel.

“I am delighted to announce Australia Post will target Net Zero by 2050 as part of our 2025 Sustainability Roadmap,” CEO and managing director Paul Graham said in a statement.

“This plan will guide Australia Post in the next phase of our sustainability journey as it becomes even more critical to accelerate our decarbonisation.”

Australia Post currently has the nation’s largest electric delivery fleet with 4,635 vehicles.

It flagged the introduction of three-wheeled electric delivery vehicles (eDVs) in 2019.

Key targets in Australia Post’s roadmap include:

  • Formally supporting the federal government’s net zero by 2025 commitment
  • Reducing emissions by 15 per cent by 2025
  • Sourcing 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025
  • Introducing fully sustainable packaging by 2025
