Regenerating the green wedge shire

Having spent more than a year recovering from Australia’s worst natural disaster on record, Nillumbik Shire Council finally has something to celebrate.

The so-called Green Wedge Shire, also known as the ‘lungs’ of Melbourne, has been listed as a finalist in the 2010 Premier’s Sustainability Awards.

Nillumbik Shire has worked closely with local Landcare groups, Recovery Committees and landowners to provide training, support and resources to assist in the rehabilitation of fire-affected lands.

Its integrated natural resource recovery program has delivered land management advice and support to individual landowners, along with erosion control, weed control, roadside works, water quality monitoring, pest control and biodiversity monitoring.

Nillumbik mayor Ken King says the community is to thank for the shire’s success because it has driven the recovery effort. MORE>>
