1980 – Bon Scott, the lead singer of Australian rock band AC/DC, dies
 
1978 – Fifteen Egyptian commandos are killed in a gun battle with Greek Cypriot soldiers at Larnace airport in Cyprus, while trying to solve a hostage crisis.
 
1942 – About 150 Japanese warplanes attack the Australian city of Darwin.
 
1915 – The Battle of Gallipoli begins. Over 240,000 allied soldiers are killed including more than 8,000 Australians.
