The Northern Territory government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the CLP and Alice Springs Town Council to deliver critical infrastructure projects.
“We are taking action to make Alice Springs once again a great place to live, work and invest,” said chief minister Lia Finocchiaro. The government’s infrastructure plan focuses on delivering projects that “prioritise children and community wellbeing through improved sporting infrastructure”.
Among the projects signed off on:
- a new regional skate and play precinct
- reinstatement of ANZAC Oval
- development of new sporting facilities in Gillen, including upgrades at Jim McConville Oval
- new Alice Springs town council library
- new multicultural centre.
Infrastructure projects are also planned to support the region’s tourism industry including the development of a new tourism headquarters, visitor information centre and an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art gallery.
“As part of our plan to rebuild the economy, we are delivering projects to improve tourism and a new visitor information centre to welcome tourists to town,” said Finocchiaro.
Minister for logistics and infrastructure Bill Yan said the infrastructure plan reflected the government’s commitment to targeted, sustainable investment in Alice Springs. “By reallocating existing resources, we’re able to deliver vital projects for Alice Springs’ future without placing any additional financial burden on Territorians,” he said.
Planning minister Josh Burgoyne added: “We are taking decisive action to enhance the quality of life for all residents in Alice Springs. By creating vibrant spaces where our community can thrive, we are building a safer, more inclusive place for everyone to enjoy.”
Alice Springs mayor Matt Paterson said improving liveability for residents is council’s number one priority.
“We’re thrilled to work with the Northern Territory government to build infrastructure that will have a positive impact on residents for generations to come,” he said. “The diversity of our community is one of the things I love most about Alice Springs, and that is further strengthened with this announcement. Along with the boost to tourism, this is a really exciting day for our community.”
Good projects for Alice Springs – hopefully clustered so people can walk short distances between facilities without having to drive.
