Free driver’s licences for Territorians

The Northern Territory Government is offering state residents free driver’s licences for one year.

Aimed to assist Territorians during the cost-of-living crisis, the initiative – overseen by the Motor Vehicle Registry – applies to more than 112,000 drivers across the state who are licensed in the NT. Drivers will be able to apply for the free licence until 30 June 2025.

Announcing the giveaway on New Year’s Day, Treasurer Bil Yan said: “From the 1st of January until June, anyone whose licence is being renewed in that period will automatically receive a 12-month discount.”

In a later statement, Yan said the free licence was one of a number of cost-of-living measures the CLP had pledged for drivers ahead of the state election in August last year.

“As we welcome in the new year, the free licence brings together our other MVR cost-of-living initiatives, including a freeze on registration fees and a new 3-year trailer registration option, saving Territorians’ time and money so they can enjoy our unique lifestyle.”

Territorians due to renew their licence on or before 30 June 2025 will receive a renewal notice with the cost of each renewal period reflecting the 12-month free period, which will now include:

  • 1 year – no fee (previously $38)
  • 2 years – $28 (previously $58)
  • 5 years – $92 (previously $115)
  • 10 years – $178 (previously $198).

Territorians who are not due to renew their driver’s licence before 30 June 202, can apply for the reissue of their existing licence with a 12-month extension to the expiry date.

“Key to restoring our iconic lifestyle is easing the cost of living,” said Yan. “The free licence for 12 months provides real relief for Territorians who told us they wanted reduced cost of living – and that’s what we’re delivering.”

Other governments have also offered drivers cost-of-living savings. Last year, the Queensland Government announced it was cutting the cost of regos for all light vehicles – including motorcycles and trailers – by 20% for 12 months from 16 September.

The initiative will save Queensland’s 5.7 million light vehicle owners hundreds of dollars during the period — “Dollars that could be spent on groceries, rent, the mortgage or put into savings,” said Premier Steven Miles. “Every dollar counts, which is why I’m doing what matters to put money back in the pockets of Queenslanders.”
