Australia 2020 summit calls for ideas

The Australia 2020 Summit has been convened by the Federal Government  to bring together some of the best thinkers from around Australia to tackle the long-term challenges facing the country.

The Summit website www.australia2020.gov.au/ has now been launched inviting the public to contribute submissions that will be made available to all on the website.

The submissions will also be presented to Summit participants to stimulate discussion and ideas about addressing our future challenges.

Individuals, schools, groups, and organisations are all being encouraged to put forward submissions.

Submission can be made online, by downloading a form and mailing it or by contacting a toll free number to have a form mailed out.

Written submissions – limited to 500 words per topic – should focus on one of the following 10 policy areas:

* Australian Economy – future directions for the Australian economy, including education, skills, training, science and innovation as part of the nation’s productivity agenda.

* Infrastructure – economic infrastructure, the digital economy and the future of Australian cities.

* Sustainability and Climate Change – population, sustainability, climate change and water.

* Rural Australia – future directions for rural industries and rural communities.

* Health – a long-term national health strategy, including the challenges of preventative health, workforce planning and the ageing population.

* Communities and Families – strengthening communities, supporting families and social inclusion.

* Indigenous Australia – options for the future of Indigenous Australia.

* Creative Australia – towards a creative Australia: the future of the arts, film and design.

* Governance –- the future of Australian governance: renewed democracy, a more open government (including the role of the media), the structure of the Federation and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

* Australia’s Future in the World – Australia’s future security and prosperity in a rapidly changing region and world.

The closing date for submissions is 5pm on Wednesday April 9, 2008.

The website says “your submission can play an important role in our national discussion about our future and facing Australia’s long term future challenges”.
