By Adam Coleman

Liverpool Plains Shire Council and Goulburn Mulwaree Council have been recognised with the AR Bluett Award at the Local Government Association of NSW annual conference in Coffs Harbour today (October 22).

“The award aims to recognise councils that have made the greatest relative progress in the state and it is the pinnacle of achievement for councils in New South Wales,” chairman of the AR Bluett Memorial Trust, John Flannery, told delegates.

The Shires Association section was awarded to Liverpool Plains Shire Council, a newly amalgamated council which was formed in 2004 from the former Quirindi Shire Council and portions of Murrurundi and Parry Shire Councils.

“The council has experienced a flood disaster, critical water shortages and development pressures. It has displayed a remarkable initiative and leadership in many areas of local government in a short time,” he said.

Mr Flannery said the shire had addressed industrial development, village services, improvements to medical services and water management in a very progressive manner.

The winner of the Local Government Association Section, was Goulburn Mulwaree Council an urban/rural authority also formed in 2004 which includes the former Goulburn City Council and Mulwaree Shire Council.

“[The Council] has had some very serious water supply and infrastructure problems for several years. The council has embrked on a remarkable change program and has tackled its problems with vision and energy,” he said.

The council was also noted for its innovative approaches to rural community development.

Highly Commended Awards were made to entries from Temora Shire Council, Clarence Valley Council and Penrith City Council.
