$1m reward for obesity ideas

The Queensland Government has offered $1 million to the communities that come up with the best ideas to combat obesity.

The unusual scheme will see towns compete in a state-wide competition to be named Queensland’s healthiest community.

According to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures, Queensland is ranked worst in Australia for the percentage of men who are overweight or obese at 60 per cent.

The winning communities will benefit from the prize pool, which will go towards “healthy” infrastructure including swimming pools, basketball courts and walking paths.
