Broadband booms worldwide with 380 Million Subscribers
Recent data announced at this year's Broadband World Forum Europe in Brussels has revealed global broadband subscribers have now surpassed 380 million, an increase of 17 percent over the past 12 months.
Europe is out in front in broadband subscriber growth for the second year in a row according to the report, which was prepared for the Broadband Forum by industry analysts Point Topic.
The report revealed Europe now has nearly 120 million subscribers, or 32 percent of the global broadband market.
European countries dominate the top ten, with Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Spain all represented.
China now leads the top 10 countries by broadband subscribers with nearly 78 million broadband subscribers after recently taking the lead from the US. China’s broadband deployment is growing rapidly – 6.5 percent in the last year alon according to the report.
Point Topic data from the most recent second quarter period (World Broadband Statistics 2008 Q2, 2008) had Australia placed down the list with a little over six million broadband subscribers and growth of around 5.26 per cent over the quarter.
The data also found Mobile broadband is taking off in many countries where 3G or WiFi/WiMAX networks are used as an alternative or complementary to fixed-line broadband access.
