Public sector union will use ads to force wage rise

The Queensland Public Sector Union (QPSU) has revealed it will spend about $1 million on a campaign to force the State Government to increase its wage offer.

The Union's Alex Scott says about 1,000 Main Roads workers walked off the job last Friday and members are prepared for a long industrial campaign.

The campaign includes a series of television advertisements, and is centred on the Government's offer of a 3.75 per cent wage increase, which the union says is below inflation levels.

“They range from administrative staff within health to child safety workers, disability workers and support staff within schools and we have a budget of over a million dollars for this year’s campaign,” Mr Scott told the ABC.

According to the Union, the current inflation rate in Brisbane is 5.1 per cent and the Reserve Bank of Australia advised on 19/08/08 that it predicts a national inflation rate of 5 per cent in December of this year.

Mr Scott said the advertisements will run well into September and if required they'll flow into October.
