Chose Canberra’s new numberplates

The ACT government is asking Canberrans to come up with new numberplate slogans in 30 characters or less.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said people were “only limited by their imagination” and encouraged voters to dream up alternative numberplates, provided they were not offensive.

“We’re all proud of our city and we love to show this no matter where we are travelling, either in the ACT or elsewhere in Australia, and our numberplate slogans reflect this,” Barr said.

He said that some of our ACT numberplate slogans had been around for a while and needed refreshing.

“It’s amazing what you can say in 30 characters or less. If you need inspiration, see what others have used around the world or get together with family and friends and brainstorm ideas.”

The deadline for submissions (which can be multiple) on the Your Say website is October 14 to be judged by a panel. The shortlist will be put to a public vote in November.

The ACT government is also asking people to choose which of the current numberplate slogans should be retained.

The five numberplates currently in circulation are:

  1. CANBERRA THE NATION’S CAPITAL
  2. CANBERRA – HEART OF THE NATION
  3. CELEBRATION OF A CENTURY
  4. CANBERRA – AGE FRIENDLY CITY
  5. FEEL THE POWER OF CANBERRA

Government News has come up with a couple alternatives:

  1. PUBLIC SERVICE HQ
  2. BMX BANDITS (after world champion BMX rider Caroline Buchanan and the city’s BMX tracks)
  3. CANBERRA – SOAP CITY
  4. CANBERRA – HEARTBREAK HIGH
After the number of Canberrans have television links, actors from Home & Away, Neighbours and Heartbreak High
  5. CANBERRA: NOT DULL

Please feel free to add any of your Canberran numberplate favourites in the comments section.
