Stations hubs for mail again

In their heyday, steam trains chugged out of Parramatta Station on their way to deliver the mail, now events have come full circle and parcels are being delivered to train stations for people to pick up.

Australia Post has installed around 80 lockers at Parramatta Station so that customers can grab their parcels for free on their way to or from work, rather than miss a delivery because they are not home.

The Western Sydney station is the second phase of Sydney Trains’ Click and Collect scheme, and follows a trial at Bondi Junction Station, where customers could pick up their Woolworths online delivery from station lockers.

NSW Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said it gave people a more convenient way to collect their parcels.

“Everyone wants to save time, so we thought bringing the parcels to the station so you get your delivery the first time would be a perfect fit,” Mr Constance said.

“Instead of getting that little card in the mail and trekking out of the way, the parcel comes to a locker at one of the networks busiest stations.”

Australia Post Chief Customer Officer Christine Corbett said the scheme gave customers greater choice in where and how they received their parcels.

“Instead of having your parcel sent to your home address you can have it sent to directly to a 24/7 parcel locker so you never need to miss an important delivery again. And best of all, it’s absolutely free to use,” Mrs Corbett said.

“Customers receive a unique access code via email or SMS to open the locker and collect their parcel.
