Logan City Council is once again proving that it’s not only solely roads, rates and rubbish, it’s all about giving its local canines the love too.

The council has engaged the RSPCA to educate dog owners on how to read their dogs’ body language, understand their behaviour and identify the causes and cures for barking. There is also a handy session on park etiquette.

Felines have not been left out either, there will be a session on cat behaviour.

Dog and cat owners are advised not to bring their four-legged fury friends along, it’s a strictly hands-off training session.

Park confrontations between dog owners and dog owners, pedestrians and cyclists are bread and butter to councils and council rangers.

The idea behind the four free seminars is to reduce nuisance barking and other irritating behaviours in order to smooth the relationship between pets and their owners but also to stop the human beings involved getting riled.

Logan Animals and City Standards Chair Councillor Graham Able said the session would offer handy tips to help owners identify what their dogs were trying to communicate to them and how to resolve dogs’ behavioural problems.

“Don’t let your dog’s poor behaviour ruin your afternoon walk,” Mr Able said.

“Learning how to read your dog’s body language and understanding park etiquette can make your outings together much more pleasurable.”

It’s not the first time that Logan Council has segued into the world of pets. In August, the council’s cheekily named two–month Desexpo campaign encouraged cat and dog owners to bring in their pets to Logan’s vet clinics for desexing, offering free nail clippings (for the dogs) and discounts on animal registration fees.

Logan City Council will hold its  free dog body language and park etiquette talk on September 19 at the council’s Animal Management Centre at 213 Queens Road, Kingston from 10am to noon on Saturday.
