The Queensland Government has refurbished the Beenleigh Police facility with the construction of a regional communications centre.

Constructing the communications centre for $8.3 million meant combining two former police communication centres in Beenleigh and Broadbeach.

Police minister, Neil Roberts said the larger communications centre would service the wider Eastern Police Region, which includes Queensland’s busiest police districts, Logan, Coomera and the Gold Coast.

“It will also have the capacity to take overflow calls from a number of other police communications centres around the state,” Mr Roberts said.

He said the facility will significantly increase the Queensland Police Service’s ability to respond to and manage incidents with closed circuit television feeds from around the region and a purpose built major incident room equipped with upgraded computer and audio visual equipment.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said the equipment installed in the centre includes phone handsets, a radio control console and voice logging recorders.

"The current software being used within the communications centre involves a number of proprietary applications from the equipment manufacturers," the spokesperson said.

According to the spokesperson, the vendors for the hardware and software are Zetron, Nice and VoIP P/L.

"Different contractors were involved in the various project elements after being selected in compliance with state purchasing policy including the involvement of either a tender process or a standing offer agreement," the spokesperson said.

The manufacturers have supplied the Queensland Police Service personnel with equipment specific operator and technical training to use the technology.

The spokesperson said ongoing service and maintenance contracts have been established with manufacturers, although first level responses for equipment faults is handled by trained Queensland Police Service technical personnel.
