A Japanese publication has claimed the Defence Ministry of Japan was developing a computer virus capable of tracking, identifying and disabling sources of cyber-attacks, with technology vendor, Fujitsu.
Cyber weapons are used to defend government computer networks from politically motivated attacks.
The Unites States, China and the United Kingdom have set-up cyber security type of operations to counter any attacks.
According to Yomiuri Shimbun Japan’s cyber weapon/virus was launched in 2008, by the Defence Ministry's Technical Research and Development Institute – in charge of weapons development.
The agency outsourced the project's development to technology vendor, Fujitsu.
Yomiuri Shimbun claimed the contract with Fujitsu sees the vendor “develop the virus, as well as a system to monitor and analyse cyber-attacks for (YEN) 178.5 million” ($2.25 million).
The Japanese publication has approached Fujitsu for comment, but the vendor declined, “citing client confidentiality”.
