Residents in Gungahlin will be connected to the National Broadband Network heading into construction in the area north of Canberra.
The NBN rollout will expand from the initial 6000 premises already commenced to 20800, with the first sites to be constructed in Ngunnawal and Amaroo.
The ACT Government is collaborating with NBN Co on the network rollout, with an across agency task force established to work on the network planning and implementation with NBN Co and its contractor Silcar Pty Ltd, a Leighton-Siemens joint venture.
Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said residents will start to see early work over the next couple of weeks after regular updates and further consultations between NBN Co and the Gungahlin Community Council to take place in November.
"From the Government's point of view, we are set to see significant transformations of services and programs - particularly in health with our use of electronic technology,” Ms Gallagher said.
According to Ms Gallagher, the NBN connection in Canberra will enhance the territory’s health infrastructure.
She said it will promote and strengthen the ACT’s role as the “tertiary centre for the region”, enabling the use of new technology in clinical, research and teaching centres.
"The early rollout of the NBN in Canberra is also good news for local businesses and will open up the possibilities for expansion far beyond the ACT borders,” Ms Gallagher said.
