Perth veers on road safety

Four intersections will receive safety upgrades if a City of Perth funding application is acknowledged.

Totalling a cost of $685100, these projects were applied for via the ‘Black Spot’ road safety program, which provides Local Government with funding from two streams from the State and Federal Governments.

Funding is provided from the State Government program that provides on a two-thirds/one-third basis, and the Federal version that provides full funding for road safety improvements.

City of Perth Chief Executive Officer Frank Edwards said the Sutherland Street, Roe Street and Railway Parade was in close proximity to the busy City West train station and the City West and Harbour Town shopping centres.

Mr Edwards said crash data from this intersection revealed 52 crashes over the past five years.

The City identified the Sutherland Street, Roe Street and Railway Parade intersection for a traffic signal upgrade, lane reduction and footpath widening; and the Winthrop Avenue and Poole Avenue intersection will receive lane marking changes and a meridian extension.

Traffic signal upgrades will go to the Hay Street and Harvest Terrace intersection, and the Newcastle Street and Stirling Street intersection.

Other public works will take place through the ‘Black Spot’ program for the current financial year.

These projects will be traffic signal and road upgrades on the Victoria Avenue and Terrace Road intersection, the St Georges Terrace, Milligan Street and Mount Street intersection, and the Mounts Bay Road and Spring Street intersection.

Main Roads WA granted $444500 for these projects, with the City of Perth funding $198167.
