Public works taking place at Little Hay Street, Factory Street and Kimber Lane will include footpath widening, street tree planting and improved street lighting and paving.

Mayor Clover Moore said the council worked with the local community, including businesses, residents and workers to develop a plan to improve Chinatown’s public spaces and laneways.

“Our plans for more pedestrian-friendly streets, new spaces for markets and outdoor dining, and better walking and cycling links to surrounding areas are designed to encourage more visitors to Chinatown and improve the environment for people who live and work in the area,” Ms Moore said.

Sydney artist Jason Wing will produce artwork titled “Beyond Two Worlds” in Kimber Lane, to be spread across pavement and walls.

According to a City of Sydney spokesperson, the council appointed Ford Civil as head contractor and Aspect Studios as head consultant.

The $5 million being spent is city funds from the annual capital works budget, the spokesperson said.

Ausgrid’s underground infrastructure work delayed the project due to completion of separate essential infrastructure works in the area prior to the laneway construction.

According to an Ausgrid spokesperson, the council approached the company before they began the “beautification” work to inquire about their cable upgrades and trenching work before the council’s next project could begin.

Construction has already begun and is expected to be completed by February 2012.
