The remote community of Warmun in West Australia will be provided with eight million dollars from the Federal Government, following recent flooding in the region.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin said funding to the community will be provided over two years under the Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) program and the National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

In addition, the government will share with WA the cost in developing a $15 million temporary emergency accommodation project to the community.

The government has also provided $140000 directly to Warmun Aboriginal Community to help with rebuild, repairs and maintenance to machinery and equipment.

It will also provide a further $55240 for child and youth workers, sporting equipment and playgroups.

A spokesperson from the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, told Government News the details of the projects for building and restoring facilities still need to be worked out with the community through the CDEP.

The spokesperson said that the CDEP will be arranging resource procurement and costing, as well as additional staff and project management to assist the recovery process.

Warmun Aboriginal Community Re-establishment Taskforce was established by WA to co-ordinate the recovery effort to rebuild flood damaged housing and infrastructure.

The Kimberly Development Commission will be a part of this taskforce and will implement the project.
