Motorola touts WiFi to local government

Motorola Solutions has come out with a set of products that deliver applications wirelessly to government departments and university campuses.

The point-to-point (PTP) Ethernet bridges allow for line-of-sight and near line-of-sight transmission of wireless broadband at a lower cost than is currently possible, operating in the unlicensed 5.8Ghz wireless spectrum.

Motorola’s products build on its wireless backhaul technology.

It also expands the choice of broadband delivery solutions for organisations looking to equip their sites with high-speed wireless broadband at a price point that would have previously made it difficult for them to do so.

Motorola Solutions’ wireless network solutions group general manager, Roy Wittert told Government News the products have relied data communications links and allowed governments to get data communications in hard to reach spots.

“[We’re] talking to a council up in Brisbane about our wireless products,” he said.

“[It’s] one of those councils that went through an amalgamation and has become a larger council.

“It has requirements for councillors to travel over distances of 100 kilometres  in open territory.”

Mr Wittert said it finished up a project for the City of Rockdale, based in south Sydney about 18 months ago.

“The council recently installed an IP surveillance system and required extra bandwidth to dump information,” he said.

“Wireless products will also help councils and government agencies once the national broadband network (NBN) comes into play.

“Government agencies will be able to use the NBN for infrastructure and then have a wireless product to sit on top to provide wifi for the community.”

According to Mr Wittert typically capital expenditure depended on speed or interference (i.e. trees in the way) and could start from $2000 - $20000.
