Broadband connection for seniors has increased their social networking, Maribyrnong Council says.

The Victorian-based council saw the official opening of the 2000th senior’s internet kiosk, through the Australian Government's Broadband for seniors, towards the end of February.

Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, joined seniors at Yarraville (part of Maribyrnong Council) to celebrate the event.

Under the plan, seniors in the community were provided with free access to broadband internet, as well as training in basic computing, internet browsing and email skills.

Free computer and internet kiosks were located in places that older Australians regularly visit, such as senior citizens centres, aged care centres and bowls clubs.

Maribyrnong’s kiosk was installed in Yarraville’s Senior Citizens Centre at the request of the council.

A council spokesperson told Government News introducing seniors to the internet increased social participation and community networking.

“It encouraged more seniors to access technology, building skills and confidence,” he said.

He said broadband was vitally important as it will help the community by boosting access to computers, internet and basic training, and helping people to stay in touch with family, friends and current events.
