Around 90 QBuild workers from Brisbane have been deployed to cyclone-affected communities, Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten has announced.

The workers will join 160 local QBuild field staff working in devastated communities from Cairns to Townsville.

Mr Schwarten said this included “ground zero” communities, such as Innisfail, Silkwood, Mission Beach, Tully and Cardwell.

"They are doing damage assessments and maintenance on schools, TAFEs, residences and other government infrastructure,” he said in a statement.

Through its Sales and Distribution Service, Department of Public Works has also delivered 1500 beds, 1000 stretchers and 150 pumps to Innisfail.

The Department helped hire 54 generators to supply power to water, sewerage and other critical infrastructure within Cassowary Coast Regional Council.

Public Works also made available to cyclone-affected communities a register of contractors with asbestos removalist accreditation and personal protective equipment and clothing.

QFleet has also assisted with the recovery effort by providing 87 additional motor vehicles.

Mr Schwarten said the Department is also working with Queensland Health to provide structural assessments of health facilities. These are just some of the measures to help Far North Queensland recover from Cyclone Yasi, he said.
