Penrith City Library goes green with Acer

A council in Western-Sydney has selected hardware vendor Acer to supply energy efficient computers.

Under the agreement, Acer and its partner Dataflex have supplied 90 computers to Penrith City Council’s Library.

The vendor also planned to plant 90 trees to offset the computers’ carbon emissions, for the Council.

Previously, the Council was running full-sized desktop units from Acer and other suppliers, said Chris Gardner, the Council’s manager of information manager and technology.

Mr Gardner told Government News, Acer’s current - the Vertron LV480 - was more sustainable than what it was previously running.

“During our assessment we found the replacement PCs used half the power of our old PCs, (135W compared to 300W),” he said.

“We ran special software to evaluate the energy efficiency.”

Acer Computer Australia’ marketing manager, Robin Tang said, the vendor’s offer to plant trees for every PC bought, to help offset the carbon footprint of the new computers, clinched the deal.

“Penrith City Council was very excited about the offsetting of carbon footprint,” he said.

“When we put forth the products and program to the City’s Lord Mayor, he jumped at the chance to plant the trees.”

Both the Council and Acer have also agreed that in the future when the computers become redundant, they’ll be exchanged one-for-one, with new computers installed at no additional cost.
