Australia's own Motown to support men's health

The name Motown is synonymous with the US city of Detroit and the famous record label that first exported African American music to the world.

But come November, the name will also be associated with the township of Moama in southern New South Wales.

Murray Shire Council has announced that for one month, Moama will change its name to Motown in support of Movember – the fundraising and awareness campaign for men’s health.

The idea was conceived by Pete White from Echuca Moama Events. He has been a strong supporter of cancer fundraising initiatives since loosing a family member to cancer five years ago.

Mr White said the name change had the backing of the local community.

“I’ve had very positive feedback today,” he told Government News.

“The residents are asking what they can do to help out.”

Men have been encouraged to grow a moustache for the month of November to raise money for the Prostrate Cancer Foundation of Australia and the national depression initiative Beyond Blue.

Businesses have also got onboard, with most of the major clubs already looking at innovative ways to support the campaign.

“We’re trying to get as many local businesses involved as possible,” Mr White added.

Murray Shire Mayor Brian Sharp said the campaign had the complete support of the Council.

“One in five Australians will experience depression at some state in their lives,” Cr Sharp said in a statement.

“It is a very serious illness and as a result of drought, depression has been magnified within our immediate region and also regional Australia.

“Equally as important, around 20,000 men in Australia each year are diagnosed with prostrate cancer.”

Council will advertise the name change across the shire and signage welcoming visitors to 'Motown' will be placed at the entrance of Moama.
