People from 70 different cultural backgrounds will be featured in a Harmony Day community service announcement to be screened across Australia leading up to March 21.

The announcements – 15 and 30-second commercials – will be broadcast nationally on free-to-air and pay TV channels from early March, and will also be available along with supplementary material on the Department of Immigration and Citizenship's (DIAC) YouTube channel, ImmiTV.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and Settlement Services, Laurie Ferguson, said the announcements would promote the importance of inclusive communities in Australia.

“Harmony Day celebrates the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promotes the benefits of cultural diversity,” he said.

“It's about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

“The Harmony Day TV commercial celebrates these ideals and captures the spirit of the younger generation of Australians.”

About 70 people from different cultural backgrounds and generations came together to film the commercial, encapsulating one of Harmony Day's key messages, 'everyone belongs'.

Among the 20 countries represented by participants were Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Turkey, Spain, Ireland, Chile, Tonga, Kazakhstan and Lebanon.
