The City of Melville has joined the ranks of the world’s most liveable and sustainable communities at an UN-endorsed awards ceremony in the Czech Republic.

The local government area in the southern suburbs of Perth was a gold winner at the International Liveable Communities Awards last week.

The city was chosen out of 11 finalists in the Whole of city category for local government areas with a population of 75,000 to 100,000.

Melville Mayor Russell Aubrey said the city was among the “very best” in the world.

“This award pays tribute to the outstanding work done by elected members and staff over recent years and confirms the sound decision-making processes, strategies and practices currently in play,” he said.

The judging panel recognised Melville’s approach to measuring well-being, community engagement framework, planning processes, focus on community safety and crime prevention, volunteering program and the comprehensive range of council services.
