Educational campaign shifts Queenslanders' water habits

The State Government’s Target 140 campaign will soon mark its first year of operation with a record 12 consecutive months of meeting water savings.

“Last week saw residents reach a record usage low 112 litres per person per day, so I’m very confident we’ll make it 52 weeks in a row next week,” said infrastructure minister Paul Lucas.

“Thirty-nine billion litres is enough water to fill 14,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools or almost a third the capacity of Hinze Dam on the Gold Coast, and it’s all thanks to the hard work of South East Queenslanders.”

The Target 140 campaign was designed to encourage 2.3 million South East Queensland residents to voluntarily change their water habits by promoting simple water-saving measures such as four-minute showers and cutting back washing clothes by one load each week.

Mr Lucas said prior to the campaign, residents were using an average of 181 litres per person per day.

“This campaign has been responsible for a monumental shift in Queensland residents’ attitude to water and accepting we would not continue wasting water the way we were,” he said.

“It has reinforced the message that those small changes in water habits can add up to big savings across the region.

“Every little thing helps.”
