Greater international collaboration can lead to safer internet: OECD

Federal communications minister Stephen Conroy has pledged Australia’s commitment to the Seoul Declaration, global alliance to combat cyber threats, at the OECD ministerial meeting held in Seoul, Korea.

The declaration, which came into effect at the meeting on the future of the internet economy, highlights the need for increased cross-border cooperation of governments and enforcement authorise in the areas of improving cyber-security as well as protecting privacy and minors.

“The Australian Government recognises that all countries can benefit from opportunities that the internet can bring but no country is spared the challenges of securing the internet,” Mr Conroy said.

“By sharing experiences and working collaboratively we can meet a diverse range of threats considered at the OECD ministerial meeting; and with resolve, ensure the internet continues to advance economic prosperity and social wellbeing.”

While welcoming the renewed focus on e-security, Oscar Marquez, head technical consultant APAC at security company Marshal, said there still is a need to increase domestic cooperation along with international collaboration.

“Yes, international cooperation is important, but we also need better cooperation between ISPs, the Government and the IT security industry in Australia if we want to make real progress,” Mr Marquez said.

“The technology exists to help users control who accesses what, but we need better education, tighter controls and clear guidelines over censorship and responsibilities at a national level to make real breakthroughs.”
