Politicians find their space online
By Staff Writer
Social networking website myspace.com has launched an IMPACT channel for people interested in politics, and social and environmental change. The channel will allow politicians and community groups to engage with one another, and promote greater public involvement in the upcoming federal election.
Australia’s site will host politicians' profiles, and Deadly IMPACT (for indigenous issues), The Big Issue, World Vision and Planet Ark. John Howard, Kevin Rudd, Bob Brown, Andrew Bartlett, Steve Fielding and Kerry Nettle are among the first politicians to become involved.
”The MySpace community has made an impact on the music industry, film industry and soon our users will leave an indelible mark on politics,” according to Rebekah Horne, Fox Interactive Media general manager.
”There is a youth voice and it is all online. IMPACT will provide instant and real feedback about what people really care about and their thoughts on particular issues.”
During the upcoming federal election campaign, the site will run independent and user-driven polls and the number of politicians ‘friends’ will provide a snapshot of their online popularity, according to MySpace.
